Scarlet’s body had been like a dead battery—worn out but now charged up. She could take on anything, but for now, she would try and make Dubbo. It didn’t last.

Within two hours, she pulled over in a place called Nyngan to get a coffee. It was your typical country town with a main street, coffee shop come deli come everything else. She sat outside and sipped her drink. When she put the cup down, it rattled on the saucer. Where had the calm from earlier disappeared to? She didn’t have to be anywhere yet, so what was her hurry? If she needed a day doing nothing but sorting out what had just happened, then so be it. She would be a mess driving, anyway. She still hated the big V-double trucks.

She found a little motel, and she settled in which took all of five minutes. She would take a walk around the town. Lisa would laugh if she knew she hadn’t made it too far up the road. The town was known for its grazing, which made a change from mining. It also had a massive renewable energy project that made her smile. She didn’t think she was a hippie but was a bit of greenie in her heart.

It didn’t take long to tour the town on foot and find herself back in her room. The motel had a pool, but if she used it, she would be keeping her clothes on this time.

The television had nothing on to distract her, so she tried to read another one of the books Doreen had given her, but it didn’t work. Instead, she paced in the narrow confines of the room. She thought back to what Lisa had said about letting the emotions control you. She sat down and took a few deep breaths. Why was she feeling like this? A part of her guessed these emotions were from her teens, but she wasn’t ready to go there yet.

Her life was always planned with what needed to be done. It was why she made a good manager at work. Here in the room, she had nothing to do but think about the fact she was on an easygoing trip with nothing planned. To stay in limbo had been her go-to for decades. She could either spend time biting her nails down to the quick or chilling and enjoying the journey. She would be mad to choose the first one.

What had she been doing all her life? She had created her personality as a grown-up to replace the teenage one that was a mess. It had worked until now. Two failed marriages and grief will do that to you. She lay on the bed and tried to relax, starting at her feet and working her way up her body as she breathed deeply. Lisa taught her how to put the meditation into practice. In the end, she wanted to run back to the farm. Stray thoughts of Nan and Mom kept coming up.
